22 October  Emsworth Maritime and Historical Trust: Talk by John Tweddell “The Rise and Fall of Emsworth Oysters”, 7.30pm, Lumley Room, Emsworth Community Centre, Church Path. Admission Members £1. Non Members £2. All Welcome.

25 October The Oyster Trail Guided walk starting from Emsworth Museum at 2.00p.m. Cost £3.00 per person (all monies go towards the upkeep of the Oyster boat “Terror”) this includes – a slide presentation and walk (lasting about 1 hour 30 minutes), trail map and Emsworth postcard. Oysters have been fished in Emsworth harbour for centuries. At the height of the industry (second half of the 19th century), almost 5 million oysters a year came out of Emsworth and almost half the locally employed population earned their living from fishing and the industries that supported it, such as boat building. Come and explore the woods and discover the fascinating world of fungi with our local expert, Rosemary Webb.
All walks start at the top of Hollybank Lane, meeting by the Friends of Hollybank Woods information board. Walks last 2 hours and start at 10am finishing about midday. (With the exception of the moth and bat evening which starts at 8pm and finishes at about 11pm.) All welcome. Children very welcome, but need to be accompanied by a responsible adult. Please wear sturdy footware/boots.

Portsdown Hill
A site of special scientific interest, this chalk ridge affords splendid views over Langstone and Chichester Harbour and out over The Solent towards the Isle of Wight. A volunteer group helps Portsmouth City Council look after the wildlife interests on the Hill

Take a walk in the gardens landscaped by Capability Brown or have a picnic in the Country Park. Meet pot-bellied pigs, pygmy goats and peacocks. Discover tropical plant life in the fabulous glasshouses. Enjoy landscaped gardens and lakeside follies, plus acres of woodland and parkland enclosing Havant Forest and reaching out towards Rowlands Castle. The Country Park has been awarded Quality Assured Visitor Attraction status.


Southleigh Forest & Hollybank Woods
Recently acquired by Havant Borough Council, the leafy woodland trails of this forest, North of Emsworth, are great for either walking or cycling.


The Hayling Billy Leisure Trail

Once the old railway line between Havant and Hayling Island, this coastal leisure trail is now used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders alike.

Portsmouth offers shopping opportunities, perhaps at the new development of Gun Wharf Quay where

 

 you can also see the construction of Portsmouth's Millennium Tower due to be completed in 2005, sadly five years late and now renamed The Spinnaker Tower. Historical attractions abound and include The Historic Naval Dockyard, Charles Dickens' Birth Place and The D- Day Museum on Southsea seafront. Portsmouth also has a ferry port with frequent and regular sailings to the ports of Normandy, Brittany and Santander in Spain. Chichester is a city with a rich historical and cultural heritage ranging from its ancient cathedral to the twentieth century Festival Theatre. The City Museum provides an insight into the  history of the city and the surrounding area of West Sussex. Nearby are the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum and The Roman Palace at Fishbourne, the finest example of a Roman Villa in the UK. Chichester is also the home of The Royal Military Police whose head quarters are located in the northern outskirts of the city. The South Downs - spend a day at the races at Goodwood ,visit a country house at Uppark, stroll around the grounds at Stansted Park, view the extensive gardens at West Dean or visit the unique Weald and Downland Museum at Singleton.  These are just some of the attractions that can be found nearby.
